A year after their movie, The Romantics, Katie Holmes catches up with her director on new projects, Adam Sandler, and her next chapter.

Katie Holmes and I are sitting in a Brooklyn diner, indulging in a favorite pastime: devising stories about people we do not know.

“They’re on their third date,” Katie says. “He’s madly in love with her. He’s hoping tonight’s the night.”

“Fourth date,” I say. “She’s not interested. She’s getting ready to break it off.”

“No! Why do you say that?” She is unconvinced by my theory.

“Look at her leg,” I say. One leg, gloved in tight red jeans, nestles perilously close to his thighs as she twirls right then left on her spinning diner stool.

“OK, fourth date,” Katie concedes. “But you’re wrong about the rest. Tonight’s the night. You can tell by the way he’s devouring her with his eyes.”

It is true that Katie has a more innocent outlook than I do, more innocent than most in this excessively hip local spot. She seems truly unaware, for example, that even while we have been sitting here, she has single-handedly stolen the heart of everyone in the restaurant.

She stands and crosses the room to get a bottle of ketchup, and even the hungriest customer stops to stare. In jeans, high-heeled black leather ankle boots, and a khaki button-down, a tiny ripple of diamonds around her neck, she looks the quintessential movie star. Her dancer’s figure and Empire State Building legs literally stop traffic — just ask the hordes of photographers who follow her every move.

She returns with the ketchup and settles into the booth. Part Bambi, part Ali MacGraw, Katie and her massive doe eyes, rosebud cheeks, and darling smile have everyone in the restaurant down for the count.

I met Katie in the summer of 2008, when we were working on The Romantics, a movie based on my novel of the same name. I wrote, produced, and directed; Katie starred and produced. She has the uncanny ability to be every kind of woman, to feel at once like a girl I have known since slumber-party days, to be, in the next breath, a formidable collaborator, the next, a funny, honest mom and a caring friend. From our first meeting, in which she modestly gave notes on how to improve her character — and several others’ — it was clear to me I was in the presence of a perfectionist.

It began with a hardy Midwestern childhood, in which piano lessons, field hockey games, and Catholic-school kilts were mandatory. Five siblings competed for the attention of her father, a lawyer, and mother, a homemaker. Mrs. Holmes sewed all the costumes for Katie’s junior high dance troupe, while Mr. Holmes supported their family of seven. An unflinching work ethic was born.

“I feel ready,” she says cryptically, as we put the game on hold.

“Ready for …” I say.

“For the next chapter of my life. I’m excited to begin a new phase: roles I might have been afraid to play before, places I want to travel to with my daughter. I’d like to build the design business. But not too fast.”

Katie is a woman who strives for excellence in all she does, challenging herself constantly as an actress, mother, friend, and businesswoman. She achieves her goals often — and in the public eye, an arena that can be even crueler than most women are to themselves. Somehow, she gives an inordinate amount to her family and friends, while demanding the highest standard from herself.

The NY Times did an article this morning announcing Marie Claire’s new Work Supplement that will be included with their November issue of the magazine and Katie will be appearing on the cover!

THE American edition of Marie Claire magazine is expanding its editorial purview — and looking for additional advertising — with a supplement devoted to working women. The effort is another sign of how print media outlets are seeking to meet the challenges posed by digital media.

The 72-page supplement will be bundled with 435,000 copies of the November issue of the American Marie Claire to be sent to subscribers in the 10 largest markets. The supplement will also be available with 100,000 copies of the issue to be sold at newsstands.

The November issue was selected to introduce the supplement because the issue is devoted to the subject of money. The American Marie Claire is published by a joint venture of Hearst Magazines, part of the Hearst Corporation, and the Comary unit of Marie Claire Album, a French company.

The supplement is named Marie Claire@Work, although given its roots it perhaps ought to be called Marie Claire au Travail. The supplement is described on the cover, which features the actress Katie Holmes, as “your get-ahead guide for career, style and success.”

Nancy Berger Cardone, vice president, publisher and chief revenue officer at Marie Claire and Marie Claire@Work, said, “When I have a meeting at an advertising agency or media agency, the majority of people sitting at the conference table are women.”

“When Joanna said, ‘What if we did a dedicated supplement for women who are successful and women who aspire to be them?’ ” Ms. Cardone said, she liked the idea at once — even if it meant expanding in a sluggish economy.

“In times of economic uncertainty, that’s when the best innovations happen,” Ms. Cardone said, and it is when marketers need to “keep the right customers coming into stores.”

Katie has been listed among those chosen to be featured in People’s annual Most Beautiful People Issue.

Her good looks and fashion sense made Holmes a natural choice to play Jackie O. in the TV biopic The Kennedys. But the 32-year-old star mom felt a connection to the former First Lady that was more than skin deep. “She had so much strength. … I loved her love of family, how important it was for her to be a good mother,” Holmes told Elle.

On family life: “In my own life, my whole world really revolves around family. I do what I need to do, but it’s like, ‘How is everybody else doing?’ And it’s wonderful for me as an actress to put some of that into a character.”

On life as a working mom on the Broadway set of All My Sons: “Suri would sit in my lap in the makeup chair. She’d hand the wig lady the bobby pins.“

On fashion: “I love Alaïa, for sure. Stella McCartney. I like Ralph Lauren because I feel like it’s very American, and I’m pretty all-American, from Ohio. Isabel Marant and a new designer, Sari Gueron.

On the genre of film she loves most: “It can be any genre. I even like vampire movies – they just have to be well done. I want to believe in the characters. The minute it starts to feel not real, I’m not interested.”

“When I met Tom, I knew we were going to be together, that we were going to get married. He does have a very big life but we just do it,” say Katie Holmes, and adds immediately that the two of them are still very much together and that they intend to stay that way always. Rumours that they have not been spending enough time together owing to their busy schedules and that as a result they are drifting a part, have started hitting the grapevine recently. And Katie is really upset over the things people say without knowing the truth.

“We’re all together. We like to be together, so Tom and I even use the house for our business meetings. We play board games like Yahtzee and Scrabble. We grill, we have pool parties, we play the Three Little Pigs and Suri is the Big Bad Wolf. Tom reads storybooks to Suri and we all laugh. When a good song comes on, he’ll break out in a dance. We’ll watch movies in bed, recently Madagascar and Cinderella, for Suri. We really have a good time,” she says, indicating that they are happily married and news that they are headed for a split are completely baseless. [SOURCE]
